90% of Humane USA-Backed Candidates Win in New Jersey

New Jersey was one of two states (along with Virginia ) that elected a new Governor and its entire state Assembly on November 8. Of the 42 candidates backed by Humane USA, 36 have emerged as victorious, five have been defeated, and one Assembly seat is still too close to call.

Of primary interest is the win by U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine (D) in the Governor's race, who earned 53% of the vote. Humane USA had endorsed Corzine, contributed money and volunteers to his campaign, and told voters about his leadership for animal welfare. In his term in the U.S. Senate, Corzine had supported efforts to end horse slaughter, crack down on illegal animal fighting, protect "downed" animals from being dragged to slaughter, increase funding for animal welfare enforcement, and stop canned hunts of exotic animals trapped behind fences.

In a gubernatorial debate, Corzine spoke in opposition to the controversial trophy hunting of black bears in New Jersey . He stated, "I'm actually not in favor of bear hunts based on the scientific information I've seen. They have bear hunts every year in New York State and haven't seemed to wean out the bear population. What we need to do is get a serious control effort, educational effort to the public to try to protect against things that attract bears to where people are." Corzine's opponent, Doug Forrester (R), had stated his support for bear hunting.

Animal welfare became a campaign issue in the race, and on election night, Corzine was declared the victor. Sherry Ramsey, New Jersey director of Humane USA, attended the victory party for Governor-elect Corzine on election night, and said, "Animals play an important role in the lives of many New Jersey voters. Countless citizens look to the state government to protect animals from cruel treatment and exploitation. We are so pleased that Humane USA could help Jon Corzine to the Governor's office, and we look forward to working with him to implement and enforce humane policies for New Jersey ."
